Stone Type: Sandstone
The second of two projects for Sunderland College working with BAM Construction, saw a new £29 million City Campus constructed in the heart of Sunderland city centre opposite Park Lane Bus Station.
Spanning 12,500 square metres, the new City Centre Campus will accommodate up to 2,000 students and more than 120 staff members. Taught at the new campus will be vocational courses transferred from the college’s Hylton Campus, including advanced engineering, manufacturing, construction trades, automotive trades, travel and tourism, and catering and hospitality. It will also feature hair, beauty and barbering facilities, a spa, a bakery, a travel agency, restaurant and a car repair service, all of which will be accessible to the public.
PMJ Masonry was tasked with the external façade cladding in Stanton Moor Ashlar Sandstone along with the main entrance surround, bike stand area and a sloping retaining wall.
Ellen Thinnesen, Principal of the college stated:
“We could not be happier with the campus. It’s a visible statement of intent – a symbol of the ambition we have as a college and a reflection of the positivity felt across the city. This is a facility that will transform the way we, in partnership with employers, deliver education, training and skills to the most important people, our students.“
Whilst delivering an economic boost to the area, its unique design and superior quality installation, has not only produced a leading educational establishment, but a head turning building to Sunderland City Centre.
