Laidlaw Music Centre – St Andrews

Main Contractor: GRAHAM Construction

Architect: Flanagan Lawrence

Completed: January 2020

Stone Type: Darney Sandstone

Project Value: £900,000

After delivering the Higgs Centre for Innovation in Edinburgh, PMJ Masonry, working alongside GRAHAM Construction again, were tasked with installing Darney Sandstone to the prestigious new Laidlaw Music Centre in St Andrews.

The Laidlaw Centre will provide a new home for St Andrews’ Music in a building which will enable community access, professional performance, tuition and rehearsal, and the study of music as part of the undergraduate degree programme.

PMJ Masonry utilised a local Darney Sandstone, selected by Architects Flanagan Lawrence, and installed this to the external facade utilising traditional processes (frame cramp and mortar).

One of the more complicated areas to this project was the southern elevations that were recessed into the windows. Using different sizes of stone and innovate steel support design, we were able to overcome this.

Before completing the project, PMJ Masonry were further tasked with 2 gate walls, that included engraving, to add a final landscaping touch to this magnificent building.
